Weighing in on losing weight, what’s working? It would appear not much is, based on the fact that only five percent are finding success with their weight loss programs. So what’s happening? One observation based on the success of big drug companies profits in the area of diet pills is that many people believe there is a magic pill out there. One that will quickly give them the miraculous weight loss their looking for. They want it to work fast, and they will deal with the side effects later. What many don’t realize though is that a basic good healthy diet paired with a moderate exercise program will give them the fastest and best results in losing weight. In simple terms there are basically two ways for the body to lose weight. One is to starve the fat by eating less and the other is to burn the fat by exercising more. Many people feel the easier option is to go on a diet and eat less than go to the gym. This works for them in the short term but for most they can’t maintain it for two reasons. First is the strict nature of most diets, it’s weighty task to maintain a normal lifestyle on them and second is your body adjusts to the diet. Your metabolism slows and you start losing muscle mass in your body. This is the point at which you say this diet is not working because you find even though you are doing the same program you are no longer losing the weight. The opposite extreme exists of course for the dieter that goes and works out every day but doesn’t change their eating habits and finds themselves also not losing weight.

Choosing a weight loss program

We can see the problems in both these weight loss program extremes. Now what would happen if a more moderate form of each program were to be combined with each other? You may find that using a combination of a healthy diet and some exercise, even a daily walk, is a fast but healthy way of losing weight that is easier to maintain as a lifestyle. You would be both burning the fat and starving the fat in a way that would produce good results in both weight loss and your long-term overall health. Over time with this process you will be programming your body to maintain a good weight and be fit. You will also find yourself not so weighted down in life; you will have more energy and vitality in everything you do. Here are few ideas that may help in your weight loss program.

• Choose a dieting program that you eat healthy foods with, is good for your long term overall health and you feel you can maintain as a life style.

• Choose an exercise program that has good strength and cardio training but most importantly contains activities that you enjoy doing. If you enjoy doing it, you are more likely to continue doing it and get the fitness benefits.
